Design Vision for a Modern Bismarck Family

The Elk Ridge home began as a design-build vision for a young, active family ready to move beyond the limitations of a spec house and into a space that truly reflects how they live. Working with Truebuild Homes — a Bismarck ND design-build team known for intentional, high-performance custom homes — the goal was to create a semi-custom layout that feels elevated, efficient, and deeply personal to the family’s lifestyle. Set on a walk-out lot overlooking the prairie, the early concepts focused on capturing the views while keeping the footprint practical and connected.

From the start, intentional design guided every decision. The plan was developed around flow, family interaction, and zero wasted space — with thoughtful structural upgrades like 9-foot basement ceilings to support the couple’s wellness lifestyle, and expansive west-facing windows positioned to frame the landscape and pour natural light into the main level. As North Dakota home builders, Truebuild sees how important it is to design for both long winters and bright open summers, and the layout was shaped with those seasons in mind.

A Truebuild Design-Build Partnership in North Dakota

The interior concept leans into organic Scandinavian simplicity, using natural materials as a foundation rather than an afterthought. The design palette centers on warm white-oak cabinetry, soft concrete tones, clean architectural lines, and subtle wood accents to keep the home calm, grounded, and durable for everyday family life. In the entry, the vision includes an ash wood slat wall — a nod to Nordic craftsmanship — while gentle arched openings throughout the plan add softness and warmth to the modern geometry. The kitchen concept blends white and white-oak cabinetry to create a clean, functional hub designed for daily routines and long, gathered evenings.

On the lower level, the design incorporates a wellness and fitness suite tailored to the owners’ active lifestyle. Concepts here include treadmill clearance for tall users, a sauna and cold-plunge zone, and large sliding doors that open directly to the walk-out patio — extending workouts into the best North Dakota weather. The result is a home concept that balances beauty and performance in a way only a true design build partnership can deliver: thoughtful, lifestyle-driven, and built around how this family wants to live for years to come.
