1980s Bismarck Kitchen Remodel with a Design-Build Approach

When our clients purchased this 1980s home in Bismarck, it carried deep family roots. She grew up visiting her grandfather here, and when the opportunity came to make it their own, the goal wasn’t to start over — it was to honor the home’s history while updating it for how their family lives today through a thoughtful design-build kitchen remodeling approach.

Designing for Gatherings and Everyday Living

The home was in great shape at its core but reflected the typical layout of its era — compartmentalized rooms and limited flow. Our clients regularly host gatherings of up to 30 people, so reimagining the main floor layout around function and connection became the priority for this kitchen remodel in Bismarck.

We began by removing a central wall and extending the kitchen into the former formal dining room. This created one large, open area where family and guests can easily gather. The new layout provides ample workspace, improved circulation, and a natural flow between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces — all while maintaining the cozy warmth of the original home. The result is a modernized main level that supports everyday living and entertaining, rooted in kitchen remodeling in Bismarck, ND.

Key Design Changes

  • Open Concept Layout: Removing walls allowed light and connection across the main floor — a hallmark of smart kitchen remodeling.
  • Dual Work Zones: The original sink area was transformed into a coffee bar and breakfast prep space, while the new main sink was centered beneath a resized window to make room for expanded cabinetry and better storage.
  • Walk-In Pantry: Added to improve organization and support daily cooking and entertaining.
  • Larger Backyard View: A new window frames the family’s wooded lot, bringing natural light and outdoor views into the kitchen.
  • Arched Openings: Replaced dated angled entryways with soft arches that complement the home’s new style.
  • Updated Finishes: New flooring, fresh paint, and the removal of popcorn ceilings tie the kitchen remodel and main-floor transformation together.
  • Dedicated Homeschool Room: The former piano room was enclosed to give the family a focused learning space.
  • Breakfast Nook: A cozy dining nook now serves as a casual spot for family meals and morning routines.
