Remodeling Older Kitchens: Restoring Original Charm

Another #HighlandAcres kitchen renovation in Bismarck, ND. Our clients reached out to Plain View with a goal of modernizing their main floor while preserving the roots of their 1960’s home. They wanted to maintain the warmth of the home with deep midcentury wood tones, but also open up their “window wall” to expose a greater site line of their backyard. The addition of a deck was also considered into the design.

Design Solution:

Eliminating obtrusive cabinetry while not losing any storage space was a priority. We modernized the pantry wall with updated cabinets that offered more functional and practical storage with the use of pull outs. The island size was increased and storage was also included on the backside. Read more below.

The previous central peninsula was a gem for storage and served its purpose to separate kitchen from dining, however it was visually disrupting and also physically limiting the flow of their kitchen. Removing this central barrier was also crucial to further open the line of site to the backyard. The soffit on the range wall was also opened up to emphasize the beauty of the brick wall along with the wooden beams. A custom range hood was chosen over the more industrial look of a stainless steel range hood to make sure the space felt the warmth of the bourbon walnut cabinetry.

The original below window cabinets offered valuable storage space, however the view gains made through their removal to allow larger windows was well worth it. Removing these cabinets also allowed us to increase the island size.

The update of the pantry wall provided a home for the convection microwave and other small appliances, along with practical pull out drawers for ease of access.
